BEHIND THE SCENES: DEVELOPING OPERATION BLACK SKY IN UNITY

Operation Black Sky Development Architecture in Unity

Creating a tactical aerial combat game for mobile devices requires balancing two competing forces: physics simulation fidelity and intuitive touchscreen controls. In this devlog, we share the technical decisions behind Operation Black Sky, from aerodynamic lift equations to mobile frame rate optimization.

1. The Vision: Tactical Air Combat on Mobile

When we set out to build Operation Black Sky, our primary goal was to bring the thrill of attack helicopter gunships and supersonic fighter jet dogfights to Android without relying on overly simplified on-rails mechanics. We wanted players to genuinely feel the weight, inertia, and aerodynamic response of their aircraft.

To achieve this, we avoided kinematic transformations and committed to a pure Unity Rigidbody physics architecture evaluated inside FixedUpdate.

2. Engineering the Helicopter Flight Model

Helicopter aerodynamics are notoriously complex. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft that generate lift through forward airspeed, a helicopter generates lift via rotating airfoils. In Unity, we modeled this by separating four distinct aerodynamic forces:

  • Main Rotor Collective Lift: Directed upwards along the helicopter's local Y-axis, proportional to throttle input.
  • Cyclic Pitch & Roll Torque: Applied along the local X and Z axes, allowing the aircraft to bank and translate forward/sideways.
  • Tail Rotor Anti-Torque (Yaw): Rotational torque around the Y-axis to steer the heading.
  • Aerodynamic Drag & Ground Effect: Quadratic velocity drag to prevent uncontrollable drifting at high speeds.

3. Mobile Touchscreen Flight Controls

One of the biggest hurdles in mobile flight simulation is input ergonomics. Physical flight sticks provide tactile feedback that touchscreens lack. To overcome this, we implemented a dual virtual on-screen joystick configuration:

The left stick controls vertical collective lift (throttle) and yaw rotation, while the right stick governs cyclic pitch and roll. By applying smooth exponential sensitivity curves to raw touch deltas, players gain precise micro-adjustments for aiming at distant targets while retaining full deflection for evasive combat maneuvers.

4. Weapon Systems & Ballistic Trajectories

Operation Black Sky features multiple weapon types, each requiring distinct mathematical calculations:

Unguided Rockets & Cannons: High-velocity ballistic projectiles that inherit the parent aircraft's velocity vector at the moment of launch. To calculate exact drop distances over range, we developed our internal Projectile Calculator.

Homing Missiles: Smart munitions utilizing Proportional Navigation guidance algorithms to smoothly intercept moving enemy targets rather than simply trailing behind them.

5. Performance Optimization on Android

Maintaining a steady 60 FPS on mobile hardware was essential for smooth flight controls. We achieved this through three core practices:

  • SRP Batching & Texture Atlasing: Combining materials into texture atlases and utilizing the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) SRP batcher reduced draw calls by over 65%.
  • Zero-Garbage Object Pooling: Pre-allocating missiles, bullet tracers, impact sparks, and smoke trails at scene load to prevent garbage collection frame drops during intense firefights.
  • Benchmarking with our FPS Calculator: Monitoring frame time spikes using our Unity FPS Calculator to ensure our render budget never exceeded 16.67 ms.
