Using JSON in Game Development & Unity
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard lightweight data-interchange format for game configurations, dialogue trees, localization tables, player save profiles, and network API responses.
In Unity C#, you can serialize and deserialize objects natively using JsonUtility.ToJson(object) and JsonUtility.FromJson<T>(jsonString):
Unity JsonUtility C# Example
[System.Serializable]
public class PlayerSaveData
{
public string playerName;
public int currentScore;
public float health;
}
// Saving data to JSON string
string jsonOutput = JsonUtility.ToJson(saveData, true);
// Loading data from JSON string
PlayerSaveData loadedData = JsonUtility.FromJson<PlayerSaveData>(jsonOutput);
