OPTIMIZATION RECOMMENDATION

For Android devices with 3GB to 4GB RAM, keeping total active texture memory under 150 MB prevents aggressive OS low-memory termination.

HOW TEXTURE COMPRESSION & VRAM MEMORY WORK

Bits Per Pixel (bpp) Formulas

Unlike PNG or JPEG files (which decompress into huge raw RGBA memory when loaded by the GPU), specialized GPU formats stay compressed directly inside VRAM:

VRAM_Bytes = (Width × Height × Bits_Per_Pixel) / 8

Enabling Mipmaps adds a geometric series of 1/4 + 1/16 + 1/64... which equals an additional 33.3% memory footprint.

ASTC vs DXT vs RGBA32

ASTC (Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression) is the industry standard for modern Android and iOS devices. An ASTC 6x6 texture looks almost identical to uncompressed RGBA32 while using nearly 90% less memory bandwidth.

For PC titles on Steam, BC7 is the premier modern format for normal maps and PBR albedo textures.
